Tattoos'          Next >>

Tattoos are known around the world as: tatoeage, tatouage, tätowier, tatuaggio, tatuar, tatuaje, tatoos, tattueringar, tatuagens, tatoveringer, tattos, and tatu, and are even more popular now than at any time in recorded history. Current estimates have one in seven, or well over 44 million people in North America alone, who have one or more tattoos. I love my tattoos and am always thinking of what and where I might have more work done. I am told once you love your tattoo/s that is how it is - slightly addictive. For me I like that mine are mostly in places I can cover up but on the whole I love tattoo's in general. I think great tattoo's look fab and my mates are always impressed when now and then we meet a bloke who is all too willing to strip his shirt off to show off his tattoo's he he.

Tattoo Designs

Tattoo designs, styles, locations are as varied as there are people who display them. In the Uk lost of people I see with old tattoos are either military or prison tattoos though now I know a lot of younger people who's tattoos are as much art as anything else. In fact the Victoria & Albert Museum featured a body art exhibition not long ago that featured tattoo art. My personal favourites are tribal, celtic designs or dragons and fantasy creatures. I once saw a seahorse of Saz's that I loved but couldn't decide where I would have it done.

Origins of Tattoo's

Believe it or not, some scientists say that certain marks on the skin of the Iceman, a mummified human body dating from about 3300 B.C., are tattoos. If that's true, these markings represent the earliest known evidence of the practice. Tattoos found on Egyptian and Nubian mummies date from about 2000 B.C., and classical authors mention the use of tattoos in connection with Greeks, ancient Germans, Gauls, Thracians and ancient Britons.

Tattooing was rediscovered by Europeans when exploration brought them into contact with Polynesians and American Indians. The word tattoo comes from the Tahitian word tattau Henna design tattooor possibly Maori - ta moko, which mean"to mark". Explorer James Cook mentions them in his records from his 1769 expedition to the South Pacific. Because tattoos were considered so exotic in European and U.S. societies, tattooed Indians and Polynesians drew crowds at circuses and fairs during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Back in the late 18th century, the upper classes were queueing up to get tats. Nowadays, tattoo trends are often led by celebs. Tattooed VIPs include Ben Affleck, Jennifer Aniston, David Beckham and Eminem. Even Barbie (yes, the doll) had temporary tattoos at one point.

Tree of Life TattooBut fashion isn't the only reason people get a tattoo. For some, it's a statement about what kind of person they are or where they're coming from. Others just love the way tattoos look or see them as a way of expressing their individuality. If you're considering one, here are some essential facts on the BBC info page. [click here]

There is also a lot of information about tattoos on Wikipedia online. This picture is taken from their site and is the tree of life. I love the idea of huge gorgeous tattoos that create a spectacular piece of art work on the back. I am determined eventually to have a tattoo created for my back that will encompass my existing tattoos but create a whole image rather than something that looks like lots of small tattoos in the same place. Perhaps a dragon that holds my tribal circle or just have it worked over the top so it is one design. My favourite back tattoo is Angelina Jolie's tiger. On of these day inspiration will strike or someone will offer to do the art work for me ! Idea's on a postcard please!

Tonya's tattoo's by Saz studio

Tonya Dragon tattoo on lower back02/04/03 - I had one of my tattoo's recoloured & a new dragon threaded into an older tattoo.

I have my tattoo's done at Saz tattoo shop in cadishead near Manchester by Hazel check out their web site for details http://www.saztattoos.co.uk/index.html. Saz is an award winning tattooist who won 'Large Black & White Female' Award at skintech exhibition for the tattoo he has did on Hazel which is pictured below (between the butterfly and the back piece).

Tonya tattoo No's 2 & 5. I love this tattoo & its my most recent. The original dragon was the twisted small one with its wings lower down. The dragon at the top that curls behind it is the new addition to this design. This tattoo is at the bottom of my back.

Tonya's tattoo No 3

Tonya Celtic shape tattoo - between shoulder bladesThe tattoo on the right is between my shoulder blades and was my 3rd tattoo. Its a celtic dragon shape with a flower in the center.

tattoo No 1 - my first tattoo is very private & tucked away & very very rarely photographed sorry! All I can say is its a butterfly in side profile and as my first one is very special. Its not my favourite but it is the most special one. It was meant to show that I would live my life my own way. Kind of an expression of freedom.

Tattoo No 4 - Orchid

Tonya foor tattoo - orchidThis one is on my left foot & is actually my favourite of all my tattoo's. Its one of hazels designs commissioned & redesigned specially for me.

My next tattoo ?

I am considering more work on my back. I would love a dragon curled around my celtic symbol trailing down my spine to meet up with the other two at the bottom. So far though I have yet to come up with the perfect design so I ponder and wait. Once I have some time I will put some thought into the design and see if I can come up with something inspired.

The Meaning of a Tattoo

Saz's workThe practice of tattooing means different things in different cultures. In early practice, decoration appears to have been the most common motive for tattooing, and that still holds true today. In some cultures, tattoos served as identification of the wearer's rank or status in a group. For example, the early Romans tattooed slaves and criminals. Tahitian tattoos served as rites of passage , telling the history of the wearer's life. Boys reaching manhood received one tattoo to mark the occasion, while men had another style done when they married. Sailors traveling to exotic foreign lands began to collect tattoos as souvenirs of their journeys (a dragon showed that the seaman had served on a China station), and tattoo parlors sprang up in port cities around the globe.

Most tattoo places have books of flash cards with hundreds upon hundreds of designs, you can search the web or take pictures to a good designer and ask them to work on a custom design.

Tattoo flashCustom tattooing (like freehand drawing without a stencil) is increasingly popular with customers, especially those with multiple tattoos. You do need to make sure the tattoo place you visit has a good artist. (Saz & Hazel are both great and to be honest some of the tattoo's that I have seen Saz create by hand are amazing)

Back pieceTattoo artists say they like the custom work -- that it's more challenging and artistically satisfying to create something new rather than using a stencil to reproduce a time-worn image such as a rose or an eagle.

Semi-naked woman with amazing tattoo's

I found this amazing article about a lady who had this gorgeous japanese dragon tattoo on her back. The story of why she did this at age 39 and the process involved from the initial cherry blossom design to the back piece sketch through outlining to completion is really interesting to read. http://www.tattoosymbol.com/terisa/first-draft.html

Some Famous Tattoo's

Angelina Jolie has some fab tattoo's and clearly loves them. I actually love the photo of her having the tiger tattoo done and would love to look for a design as striking as this to compliment my dragon's.
