Since I was a woman travelling alone I have tried to think about people travelling alone when writing these pages. I include in that GAP year students, backpackers that are travelling on their own or like me older kids who have decided to do their GAP year a long time after school and college!
It can be kind of scary travelling around the world on your own especially if you are a woman and on your own. Various people gave me bits of information which were really useful and other things I picked up while travelling. I figure there is no harm in listing a few here plus a list of must have in your luggae / backpack items.

Those things I was so glad I had !
One of the things that I was told was to prepare myself mentally. To be aware that the first night alone (especially if it was a long way from home like South America to the Uk) could be very lonely. You feel very isolated. All of a sudden you realise how much you want to talk to your mum or a mate and how easy it is to do that at home but not somewhere like South or Central America (Honduras fitted that category) where your mobile phone (which by the way worked fine In Miami and your provider assured you would work in Honduras) doesnt ! Just being aware that these feelings might happen made me prepared for it. Take a book some of your favourite sweets and get some rest. The sunshine makes all the difference the following day. But be prepared for those times when you feel isolated, alone, cant understand the language around you and almost wish you weren't there on your own. Be prepared and just think what Madonna would do. he he !!
